The Family Justice Center Movement

A Model of Best Practices for Supporting Survivors
Recognized by the United States Department of Justice
The U.S. Congress recognized the importance of the Family Justice Center model in Title I of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA 2005). As stated by Mary Beth Buchanan, Acting Director of the Office on Violence Against Women at the time:
“The Family Justice Center is, at its core, a concept that increases community capacity while also providing diverse, culturally competent services to victims and their children from a single location. It is common sense that such an approach, if executed properly, will provide greater assistance to those in need.”
How a Family Justice Center Benefits Your Community
Family Justice Centers focus on providing immediate and holistic long-term support to survivors of domestic and sexual violence and their children, creating communities of safety, support, and healing.
Unlike other service approaches that seek to coordinate access to services, Family Justice Centers bring service providers under one roof where they provide direct services to adult and child trauma survivors, mitigating obstacles to safety, support, and healing.
We are proud to say that communities with flourishing Family Justice Centers have the lowest homicide rates of any intervention strategy.
